Introduction To Criminal Justice

Course Description:

This one-semester course is an overview of the criminal justice process. Students will learn the duties and responsibilities of the police, courts, and corrections. Included in this course are the historical development of the system and the study of landmark Supreme Court decisions that impact criminal justice. This course may include fields trips to various location during the semester and is a prerequisite for the Police Procedures course.

Fire and Emergency Medical Services
2 Units • Grades 11, 12

Prerequisites:

11th or 12th grade or member of a Fire Department or Rescue Squad

Course Description:

This one semester course presents a comprehensive educational program to students interested in pursuing a career, volunteer service, or post secondary education in Fire Service or Emergency Medical Services. In the emergency medical segment, the student will gain Department of Transportation certification as a First Responder through Upstate Emergency Medical Services Council, which lays the ground work for future emergency medical technical classes. The Firefighting segment prepares students to take the S. C. Fire Academy classes, either as a paid firefighter or a volunteer fire fighter. Students will spend a portion of this course working in an EMS or Fire Service setting during class time.

Police Procedures

Course Description:


This one-semester course is designed for students interested in a career in law enforcement and will offer the high school students an opportunity to learn various aspects of police procedures and operations used in law enforcement today. Students will participate in demonstrations of search and arrest techniques and fingerprinting and gain an understanding of forensic science and how it is used in the field, along with investigative procedures used to solve crimes. Other activities will include report writing, collections and preservation of evidence, and testifying in court. Various guest speakers working in the law enforcement field will deliver presentations on relevant mattes and concerns. This course will include field trips and will provide an opportunity for students to see first hand how the police perform their duties.
